Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce (Spaghetti al pomodoro)

Bring a large pot of water to boil, add salt to taste then add spaghetti and boil until is "al dente," aprox 8 to 10 minutes.
Slice the onion, put in a skillet, pour in the olive oil and heat on medium fire
Now chop tomatoes, if you don't have fresh tomatoes substitute with peeled tomatoes squizing them with hands into the skillet.
Once onion is gilded add chopped tomatoes, saute and let it cook on medium heat
To eliminate the tartness of tomatoes, add a pinch of sugar in the sauce.
Now add a pinch of black pepper and the basil roughly chopped, saute, add a ladle of pasta cooking water and let it evaporate.
Once spaghetti is cooked, drain and put in the pan, saute and sprinkle with parmesan
Transfer spaghetti to a dish, garnish with some of the basil leavesand and sprinkle again with parmesan before serving.
